Methods to Enable Remote Assistance on Windows 10

There are two methods by which you can Enable Remote Assistance on Windows. Both methods are quite easy, but the first one is easiest.

Now, let me show you the action steps you need to take in method 1.

Method 1: Enable Remote Assistance on Windows using Control Panel

In method 1, we’ll use the easiest option available i.e going into the settings through the control panel and do some simple settings to Enable Remote Assistance. So the no.1 step is

  1. Open “Control Panel” and search for ‘remote’. The windows will display all the search results.

  1. From the results shown, select the first option “Allow remote access to your computer”. It will directly open the Remote tab in System Properties.

  1. Now make sure the “Allow Remote Assistance connections to this computer” checkbox is checked, if not then click on it.

  1. Now click Advanced option (refer image above). Here, you can configure certain settings. For instance, you can set limits for the use of remote assistance, choose to allow the computer to be used remotely, set the maximum amount of invitations.

  1. Also note, if you clear the “Allow this computer to be controlled remotely” checkbox, the helpers can see your windows screen, but not take full control of your PC, which is not recommended.
Configuring Remote Assistance Settings
  1. After you have configured the settings, click on OK, and then Apply the settings by clicking on the apply button and then close all the tabs.

Now you are done, but if you find that your Windows Firewall is blocking Remote Assistance, then you need to create a rule so that Windows Firewall allows Remote Assistance. Here’s how you can create a rule.

  1. Open “Control Panel” again and this time search for ‘firewall. The windows will display all the search results. Now click on the Windows Firewall option.
Search for Windows Firewall in Control Panel
  1. Now, go to the left pane and click “Allow an App or Feature through Windows Firewall.” (The very first option after Control Panel Home)

  1. After clicking on it, you’ll find a list of devices that are enabled or disabled through your Windows Firewall. When you first enter this tab, you have no control/access to change the settings. Check the font color, it’s light black and also take a look at the bottom, you’ll find options such as Remove, Allow another program, OK, etc are unavailable as well.
  1. To make any changes here, you have to click on the “Change Settings”. A popup will appear, click “Allow”/Yes to proceed further.

  1. Once you have clicked on the “Change Settings” option and given the admin permission, the font color suddenly changes to black and other options also become available.

  1. Now, to allow Remote Assistance, check both private and public boxes and then Click OK to apply the settings and now, you can close all the tabs.

Woah! That was the easiest method to Enable or rather say allow remote assistance on Windows 10. I guess getting a remote assistant on windows 8 would be somewhat similar. Anyways, now, let me show you the second method.

Method 2: Enable Remote Assistance on Windows 10 using Registry Editor

This is an optional method, I recommend you to use the first method as it’s easy and safe.

Direct Changes in Registry Editor sometimes cause errors. So to be on the safe side, use the method no. 1.

Now, you may wonder, why I’m sharing the second method when it’s unsafe, simple, it’s my job 🙂 and also if applied correctly it doesn’t cause any effect to your computer. Now, let’s dive in and take the action steps…

  1. First, open “Run” and then type “Regedit” and hit enter. If prompted by user account, then allow (yes) it to access Registry Editor.

  1. Now browse to the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Remote Assistance

  1. Once you click on “Remote Assistance” a lot of options expand in the right pane. Now, in order to enable Remote Assistance, double-click the DWORD entry fAllowToGetHelp in the right pane, and set its value data to 1.
  1. Next, double-click the DWORD entry fAllowFullControl and set its value data to 1, if you want to allow the person offering the assistance to take full control of this PC. Refer to the image below.
